Edging: what it involves
Edging cuts a clean, defined line where lawn meets a bed, path, driveway or patio.
Edging cuts a clean, defined line where lawn meets a bed, path, driveway or patio.
It stops grass creeping into beds and gives borders a sharp finish. Methods include a string trimmer turned on its side, a powered edger with a vertical blade, a manual half-moon edger and installed borders of metal, plastic, brick or stone.
A trenched edge, cut a few inches deep, holds mulch in place and is repeated through the season as grass grows back. Edging works well on damp but not soaked soil, and curves are cut with a steady hand and a guide such as a hose laid along the line.
Sprinkler heads, lights and cables near the edge are marked first, because they are easily damaged. The length of the borders, the type of edge wanted, the soil and the condition of the existing lines describe the job, as do photos of the borders and a note about any slopes.
