Lawn mowing: what it involves
Lawn mowing is the regular cutting of grass to a steady height.
Lawn mowing is the regular cutting of grass to a steady height.
Blades are set to suit the grass type, and a sharp blade gives a clean cut that heals well, while a dull one tears grass and leaves brown tips. Mowing is usually combined with trimming along fences and walls and clearing clippings from paths and driveways. Frequency follows growth: weekly in the growing season, less often when growth slows.
Cutting too short stresses turf, so no more than a third of the blade height is removed at once. Wet grass clumps and cuts poorly, and slopes, trees and garden beds make some areas slower to work than open lawn. Pet waste, toys and hoses are cleared first, and lawn edges near beds are marked clearly. The size of the lawn, the grass type and any slopes or obstacles describe the job.
